Subarctic Plant Fungus Invades the UK
A plant disease normally found in subarctic climates has been identified for the first time in the UK in buttercups as far south as Herefordshire.
Sclerotinia subarctica, a fungus known to affect both crops and wild plants, has also been found in carrots and meadow buttercups in Perthshire by plant scientists at the Warwick Crop Centre in the School of Life Sciences at the Univ. of Warwick.
It is closely related to Sclerotinia sclerotiorum which commonly causes disease in crop plants such as lettuce, carrot and oilseed rape.

Phallus indusiatus
Syn : Dictyophora indusiata
Division: Basidiomycota
Subdivision: Agaricomycotina
Class: Agaricomycetes
Order: Phallales
Family: Phallaceae
- is a stinkhorn fungus in the Phallaceae family
-The common name of this species is based on the net or indusium, which is attached below the enlarged conical head. The net varies in length, usually white but may be yellow or orange. Has a fetid smell which attracts flies.(stinkhorn)
- commonly called in English long net stinkhorn, crinoline stinkhorn, or veiled lady, is a stinkhorn fungus which grows in bamboo thickets in China. This gives rise to its alternate common name of bamboo fungus or bamboo pith, and its Chinese name zhu sheng (竹笙, pinyin: zhúshēng) or zhu sun (竹荪; pinyin: zhúsūn). It is used as an ingredient in Chinese haut cuisine, particularly that of Yunnan and Canton. http://curupkami.blogspot.com.au/2009/03/fungi-phallus-indusiatus-lovely-white.html
-features a long and elaborate “skirt.”
-Saprobic ( survive by decomposing dead or decaying organic material) .; growing alone or gregariously in woods, especially in disturbed-ground areas
-Nutritional analysis has shown that the mushroom is rich in protein, carbohydrates and dietary fiber. The mushroom also contains various bioactive compounds, and has antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. http://www.benthamscience.com/open/tomycj/articles/V003/20TOMYCJ.pdf
-The fruit bodies of the fungus contain biologically active polysaccharides. A β-D-glucan called T-5-N, prepared from alkaline extracts,[44] has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/0008621582850271
-This specimen is the first I’ve seen of the skirted phalloids :) ,although the skirt had already started to deteriorate I was quite excited to see it . The smell was very strong spreading 4 - 5 m ! Found in April , Grovely Tafe, Brisbane, beneath Cotton tree Hibiscus
