Crustose Lichen, Black: Verrucaria (possibly Viridula), Orange: Candelaria Vitellina

Note: Lichen have the remarkable ability to break down the very rocks on which they grow. This allows them to extract minerals from their substrate. Many sedimentary rocks began long ago as living biomass which over time has been transformed into geological formations. Therefore lichen effectively returns these compounds back to the circle of life where they can once again be synthesized into living organisms.
