    Beautiful fungi from our lovely wintery hike in Kettle Moraine State Forest.

    The protrusions on the bottom of the second photograph are referred to as “teeth” and are a characteristic of hydnoid fungi (family Hydnaceae, the tooth fungi), members of the phylum Basidiomycota. The teeth of the fruiting body of the fungus produce spores on their surface.
